Detlef Keller ist die zweite Hälfte des berühmten Duetts Keller & Schönwälder. Harmonic Steps ist sein 8. Soloalbum. Sein letztes, Different Faces, das von den Kritikern als sehr gut bewertet wurde, erschien 2005. Harmonic Steps, eine Doppel-CD, basiert auf den eigenen Reflektionen von Detlef Keller. "Einen Schritt nach dem anderen, so bewegen wir uns im Leben. Der erste Schritt ist der schwierigste"; so können wir im Begleitheft lesen. Auf der CD Harmonic Steps befinden sich 16 Titel und für Detlef Keller sind dies 16 Schritte, die uns zu harmonischen Wegen führen, wobei Harmonie ein Bedürfnis des deutschen Synthesizer-Spielers ist. Die erste CD heißt Electronic Steps, ein sinnträchtiger Titel, wo wir sehr elektronische Stücke erwarten und unsere Eindrücke sind richtig. Electronic Step 1 ist ein hypnotischer sequentieller Wirbel, ausgeglichen durch dynamisches Schlagzeug, das durch seine Präzision auffällt. Unter kosmischen Klangeffekten vervielfältigen die Synthesizer melodiöse Schichten von dunklen und unterwürfigen Refrains, wodurch einem Titel eine ektoplasmische Tiefe mit vielfältigen harmonischen Variationen gegeben wird, die sich über verschiedene Ebenen verteilen. Schritt für Schritt wird dieser erste Teil reich durch sequentielles Haken und harmonische Passagen, überdeckt von melodiösem Synthesizer, der auf Schichten von Akkorden von Streichern geformt ist. Der zweite Teil ist rein melodisch. Ein seidiger Titel, der sich um eine Kreisbewegung dreht mit einem Schlagzeugwirbel und einem Glockenspiel-Sequencer. Dieser synthetische Refrain wirbelt ständig in einem Universum mit mehrfachen Impulsen. Wie ein Bolero, der sich unter einer Sammlung von synthetischen Schichten mehrfacher Formen entwickelt. Ein großartiges Stück. Electronic Step 3 ist ein handfestes Stück, das Synthesizer-Pop-Sequenzen mit hämmerndem Schlagzeug im Stil einer Neuen Ordnung benutzt. Das Klavier fügt eine kleine hängende Melodie hinzu, die nichts ist im Vergleich zu dem bemerkenswerten Flötensynthesizer, der uns mit prächtigen harmonischen Segmenten überflutet. Ein weiterer kraftvoller Titel, von denen es viele auf dieser Doppel-CD gibt. Electronic Step 4 unterscheidet sich durch eine schwere Bewegung. Synthetische Schichten und Riffelungen vereinigen sich überall zu einem moderaten Tempo mit analogen Klangeffekten, die uns an die kosmische Seite erinnern, die immer die Ambitionen der Berliner Schule nährt. Sanft dahin gleitende Synthesizer animieren den Anfang von Electronic Step 5. Ein sagenhafter Titel, der die ganze Tiefe und das gesamte Wissen des historischen Stils der Berliner Schule ausschöpft, mit hypnotischen Rhythmen mit tausend Geschmäckern, die sich in einer Atmosphäre zu progressiven Impulsen entwickeln. Der Synthesizer ist träge und strotzt vor quälenden, honigsüßen Solos, die mit einem Seufzer im Herzen hängen bleiben - so stark wimmeln die Intonationen vor Empfindsamkeit. Ein 20-minütiges sehr raffiniertes Musikstück, das mehrfache melodiöse, wiederkehrende Segmente enthält aber mit einer feinen, raffinierten Entwicklung. Der letzte Schritt der ersten CD zeigt die kosmische Seite der Berliner Schule. Eine langsame Sequenz, die sich auf nüchternem Schlagzeug und einen langen Schleifenimpuls bewegt. Dadurch wird dem Synthesizer Zeit gegeben, viele Solos mit rotierenden hypnotischen Harmonien auf minimalistischen Akkorden zu erzeugen.
Piano Step bietet 10 Schritte die, das haben Sie wahrscheinlich erraten, von einer süßen musikalischen Zärtlichkeit sind. Step 1 ist eine sagenhafte Einleitung mit der Sanftheit einer Nacht, wo das Klavier im Schatten eines Synthesizers mit Streichern beruhigt. Eine großartige Melodie mit einer Nostalgie, die die Seele belebt. Die Arrangements sind erhaben wie in Schritt 2 und der symphonische Synthesizer begleitet mit einer wunderschönen Klavierbewegung auf leichten Panflöten. Ein wenig mehr und wir würden uns in der Morgenröte des New Age befinden, wie in Step 9. Step 3 ist etwas rhythmischer, nach einer sanften Einleitung auf einem kreisförmigen Klavier wird das Tempo lebendiger aber in entspannter Stimmung, wo ein Synthesizer auf nettem Schlagzeug Walzer tanzt Leicht, zärtlich und harmonisch, insbesondere durch die Anwesenheit eines großartigen virtuellen Akkords. Hier finden wir einen erheblichen Kontrast zu Step 4 mit seinem sequentiellen Rhythmus, der auf einem sich drehenden niedrigen Basston wirbelt. Metallische Schlagzeuge, sogar industrielle, die den Rhythmus tupfen - Step 4 bleibt nicht melodiös sondern kollidiert auf dieser ruhigeren Seite, wo der Ton romantisch und nostalgisch ist. Step 5 ist ein weiteres kleines Juwel der Zärtlichkeit, wo die Erinnerungen, die Melancholie sich zu einer feinen, synthetischen Bewegung bekennt, die das Herz zum schmelzen bringt. Eine seidige Violine mit chinesischem Geist überquert die romantischen Vereinbarungen, wodurch einem der Schauer den Rücken hinunter läuft. Eine weiche, nostalgische Serenade, die ihrem Impuls in Step 6 und 7 folgt, die so schöne Perlen der Harmonie sind. Detlef Keller dringt tief in sich selbst hinein, um uns ohne Worte zu zeigen, mitzuteilen, dass die Schritte nicht immer die sind, die wir gerne gehen würden. Die Melodie, die Step 7 wirbeln läßt, ist einzigartig und vereint wunderschöne Arrangements von Vangelis mit einem rasenden Synthesizer, der unsere Herzen berührt wie eine seelische Qual. Step 8 ist hauptsächlich elektronisch und von reinster Berliner Schule mit einer Klangfülle, die für Keller & Schönwälder typisch ist. Eine sinusförmige Bewegung, die sich langsam dreht und ihre Zärtlichkeit den kosmischen Klangeffekten aussetzt. Der Flöten-Synthesizer schwelgt voll Anmut und Schönheit in der Nostalgie unserer Erinnerungen. Step 10 umhüllt Piano Step mit einem wilden Klavier, das die Melodie auf großartigen Arrangements webt. Detlef Keller überrascht. Auf Harmonic Steps zeigt er sein immenses Talent als Schreiber und Synthesizer-Spieler. Electronic Step ist ein reines Wunder der Berliner Schule. Auf der anderen Seite wussten wir nicht, was wir von seinen Piano Steps erwarten sollten. Selbst wenn ich keine seiner anderen Solo-Arbeiten gehört hätte, wäre ich mir seiner harmonischen Seite bewusst. Und ich bin wirklich erstaunt. Wunderschöne und großartige harmonische Stücke, mit Wärme geschrieben, mit der hohen Gesinnung seiner fest verankerten Gefühle. Der deutsche Synthesizer-Spieler hofft, dass diese Kompositionen Spuren hinterlassen, so wie Spuren im Sand. Metaphorisch? Vielleicht, aber er erreicht sein Ziel. Mehrere Titel auf dieser Doppel-CD hinterließen Spuren und riefen alte Erinnerungen wach. Harmonische Abdrucke einer attraktiven Musikwelt, die nicht von der Kälte sind, die manche ihr zuschreiben. Hut ab vor Ihnen, Herr Keller, für diese großartigen Harmonic Steps.

Detlef Keller is the second half of famous German duet Keller & Schonwalder. Harmonic Steps is its 8th album solo. His last, Different Faces, that criticism judges very good, appeared in 2005. Harmonic Steps, a 2 CD set is based on Detlef Keller’s own reflections. ‘’ One step after the other, that is how we are moving in life. The first step being the most difficult on’’; can we read inside the artwork. There are 16 titles in Harmonic Steps, and for Detlef Keller they are 16 steps which carry out to harmonious ways, harmony being a need for the German synthesist.
First CD is entitled Electronic Step, an evocative title where we expect very electronic tracks, and our impressions are right on it. Electronic Step 1 is a hypnotic sequential swirl balance with energetic percussions that strike with accuracy. Among cosmic sound effects, synths multiply melodious layers on dark and submissive chorus, giving an ectoplasm depth to a title with multiple harmonious variations which are spread out over various levels. Step by step, this first part grows rich by sequential hooking and harmonious passages, covered with melodious synth which is moulded on chords strings layers. The 2nd part is purely tuneful. A silky title which spins around a circular motion with roll of percussions and a chime sequencer. This synthetic refrain whirls constantly in a universe with multiple impulses. Like a bolero progressing among its collection of synthetic layers of multiple forms. A superb piece. Electronic Step 3 is a solid track which uses synth pop sequences with hammering percussions in a New Order style. The piano adds a bit of hanging melody which is nothing compared to the remarkable fluty synth which floods us of marvellous harmonious segments. Another powerful title, as they are many on this 2 cd set. Electronic Step 4 differs with a heavy movement. Synthetic layers and striations fuse of everywhere on a moderate tempo with the analog sound effects which recall us the cosmic side always nourished the Berlin School ambitions. Soft floating synth animates the beginning of Electronic Step 5. A fabulous title which exploits all the depth and the knowledge of the Berlin School historic style, with its hypnotic rhythms at thousand savours which develop in an atmosphere to progressive impulses. Synth is languorous and abounds of tortuous, honeyed solos which hang a sigh within the heart, so much the intonations swarm of sensitivity. A 20 minutes piece of music quite elaborate which contains multiple melodious segments that are repetitive, but with a light subtlety in the evolution. The last step of cd 1 presents the cosmic side of Berlin School. A slow sequence which moves on sober percussions and a long loop impulse. Giving synths time to generate many solos on minimalist chords with rotation hypnotic harmonies.
Piano Step presents 10 steps which, you will have guessed it, are sweet musical tenderness. Step 1 is a marvellous preamble with a nightly softness where the piano lulls in the shade of a string chord synth. A superb melody with a soul breathing nostalgia. Arrangements are sublimes there, very as Step 2 and its symphonic synth which go along with a beautiful piano move on light panpipes. A little more and we would be at the dawn of New Age, like Step 9. Step 3 is a bit more rhythmic, after a soft intro of a circular piano, the tempo becomes lively but in a relax mood where a synth waltz on nice percussions. Light, tender and harmonious, especially with the presence of superb virtual chorus. It is a whole contrast compared to Step 4 with its sequential rhythm whirling on a rotary low drone. Metallic percussions, even industrial, which dab the rhythm with heat, Step 4 does not remain melodious but clashes in this quieter side where the tone is romantic and nostalgia. Step 5 is another small jewel of tenderness where memories, melancholy got out of the closet on a fine synthetic movement that melts the heart. A silky violin with Chinese spirit traverses the romantic agreements, making shiver the backbone. A soft nostalgic serenade which follows its impulse on Step 6 and 7 which are such beautiful pearls of harmony. Detlef Keller goes deep inside him to show, to tell us without words that the steps are not always those which would like to do. The melody which makes whirl Step 7 is one of a kind that join beautiful arrangements of Vangelis, with a tearing synth which ravels on our heart, like a heartache. Mainly electronic, Step 8 is pure Berlin School with a very Keller & Schonwalder sonority. A sinuous movement that slowly turns, exposing its tenderness to the cosmic sound effects. Fluty synth floats in the nostalgic of our memories with grace and beauty. Step 10 encloses Piano Step on a wild piano that weaves his melody on superb arrangements.
Detlev Keller astonishes. On Harmonic Steps he shows his immense talent of writer and synthesist. Electronic Step is a pure wonder of Berlin School. On the other hand, we didn’t know what to expect from his Piano Steps. Even if I never heard any other of his solo works, I was aware of his harmonious side. And I’m really amaze. Beautiful and superb harmonious parts write with heat, with the nobility of his the most anchored feelings. The German synthesist hopes that these compositions will leave traces, as those whom make prints in sand. Metaphorical? Maybe, but he reaches his goal. Several titles on this double set left traces and awoke old memories. Harmonious prints of an attractive musical world that doesn’t have the coldness witch some attribute. Hat to you Mr. Keller for this superb Harmonic Steps.

Le premier pas étant le plus difficile ’’; peut-on lire à l’intérieur de la pochette. Il y a 16 titres sur Harmonic Steps, et pour Detlef Keller il s’agit de 16 pas qui mènent à des chemins harmonieux, l’harmonie étant une nécessité pour le synthésiste Allemand. Le premier cd s’intitule Electronic Step, un titre évocateur où on s’attend à des titres très électroniques, et on ne se trompe pas. Electronic Step 1 est un tourbillon séquentiel hypnotique fort animé par des percussions pondérées qui frappent avec justesse. Parmi des effets sonores cosmiques, les synthés multiplient les strates mélodieuses sur des chœurs sombres et soumis, donnant une profondeur ectoplasme à un titre aux multiples variations harmonieuses qui s’étalent sur différents niveaux. Pas à pas, cette première partie s’enrichit de passages séquentiels accrocheurs et harmonieux, enrobés d’un synthé mélodieux qui se moule sur des strates violonées. La 2ième partie est purement mélodieuse. Un titre soyeux qui virevolte autour d’un mouvement circulaire sur des roulements de percussions et un séquenceur carillonné. Ce refrain synthétique tournoie constamment dans un univers aux multiples impulsions Comme un boléro progressant parmi sa collection de strates synthétiques aux formes multiples. Un superbe morceau. Electronic Step 3 est un solide morceau qui utilise des séquences à la synth pop avec des percussions martelantes à la New Order. Le piano ajoute un brin de mélodie accrochante qui ne se compare pas au remarquable synthé flûté qui nous inonde de merveilleux segments harmonieux. Un autre titre puissant. Electronic Step 4 diffère avec un mouvement lourd. Des strates et striures synthétiques fusent de partout sur un tempo modéré aux effets sonores analogues qui nous rappellent que le côté cosmique a toujours nourri les ambitions de la Berlin School. Un doux synthé flottant anime le début d’ Electronic Step 5. Un titre fabuleux qui exploite tout le terroir de la Berlin School avec ses rythmes hypnotiques aux mille saveurs qui progressent dans une atmosphère aux impulsions progressives. Le synthé est langoureux et foisonne de solos tortueux, mielleux qui accroche un soupir à l’âme, tant les intonations grouillent de sensibilité. Un long morceau bien élaboré qui contient de multiples segments mélodieux qui se répètent, mais avec une légère subtilité dans l’évolution. Le dernier pas de ce cd 1 présente le côté cosmo atmosphérique de la Berlin School. Une séquence lente qui évolue sur des percussions sobres et une longue impulsion bouclée. Laissant le temps aux synthés de s’exprimer avec de nombreux solos sur des accords minimalistes aux rotations hypnotiquement harmonieuses. Piano Step nous présente 10 pas qui, vous l’aurez deviné, sont des petites tendresses musicales. Step 1 est un merveilleux préambule à une douceur nocturne où le piano se berce à l’ombre d’un synthé violoné. Une superbe mélodie avec une âme qui respire la nostalgie. Les arrangements y sont sublimes, tout comme sur Step 2 et son synthé symphonique qui accompagne un beau mouvement pianoté sur une légère flûte de Pan. Un peu plus et nous serions à l’aube du New Age, comme le Step 9. Le Step 3 est plus rythmé. Après une douce intro d’un piano circulaire, le rythme s’anime mais dans une ambiance relaxe où le synthé valse sur de gentilles percussions. Léger, tendre et harmonieux, surtout avec la présence de superbes chœurs virtuels. C’est tout un contraste par rapport à Step 4 avec son rythme séquentiel tourbillonnant sur un bourdonnement rotatif bas. Percussions métalliques, voire industrielles, qui tamponnent le rythme avec ardeur, Step 4 n’en demeure pas moins mélodieux mais détonne dans ce milieu relaxant où le ton est à la romance, la nostalgie. Step 5 est un autre petit bijou de tendresse où les souvenirs, la mélancolie sont au rendez-vous derrière un fin mouvement synthétique à fondre l’âme. Un soyeux violon aux effluves Chinois parcourt les accords romanesques, faisant frissonner l’épine dorsale. Une douce sérénade nostalgique qui suit son impulsion sur Step 6 et 7 qui sont d’aussi belles perles d’harmonie. Detlef Keller va au plus profond de lui-même pour nous interpeller, nous dire sans paroles que les pas ne sont pas toujours ceux que l’on voudrait faire. La mélodie qui fait tournoyer Step 7 est un moment unique qui rejoint les beaux arrangements de Vangelis, avec un synthé poignant qui défile sur notre cœur, comme une peine d’amour. Majoritairement électronique, Step 8 est un pur Berlin School à la sonorité très Keller & Schonwalder. Un mouvement sinueux qui tourne lentement, exposant sa tendresse aux effets sonores cosmiques. Le synthé flûté flotte dans la nostalgie de nos souvenirs avec grâce et beauté. Step 10 clôture Piano Step sur un piano féroce qui tisse sa mélodie sur de superbes arrangements. Le mouvement crescende sur des violons denses et enveloppants et un piano franc qui détache ses notes avec une intensité indomptée. Detlev Keller étonne. Sur Harmonic Steps il nous démontre son immense talent de compositeur et de synthésiste. Electronic Step est une pure merveille de Berlin. Par contre, on ne savait pas trop quoi s’attendre de son Piano Step. Et c’est là que je fus réellement étonné. De belles pièces superbement harmonieuses construites avec chaleur, avec la noblesse de ses sentiments les plus ancrés. Le synthésiste allemand espère que ces compositions laisseront des traces, comme celles que font les empreintes de pieds dans le sable. Métaphorique? Certes, mais il a atteint son but. Car plusieurs titres sur ce double cd laissent leurs traces. Des empreintes harmonieuses d’un monde musical fascinant qui n’a pas la froideur qu’on lui attribut. Chapeau Mr. Keller, c’est un superbe cd.

The 1st CD features a six-part suite called: 'Electronic Steps' and lasts a shade under seventy-four minutes. Now I THINK he's trying to do something that many others have tried to do - and many others have failed to succeed - and that is to combine "trad" synth with more "contemporary" electronic music, to produce what effectively could be called "ambient trance with melodies". So, how's he done? Well, the answer is "pretty good" really. He's succeeded by slowing down the trance rhythms to a pace that matches the synth/piano melodies, string synth drifts and cosmic synth surrounds, so that it becomes an album that is 75% traditional synth music and 25% trance-ambient, which is about right for the synth market, and way off beam for the trance fans, being far too slow and sweet for the latter to derive any enjoyment out of it. That said, for synth fans who want chunky beats and solid rhythms from electronic drums, sequencers, synths and rattling electro-percussives, it works well, the nearest to dance-floor being the almost 'I Feel Love' style sequencers that appear six or so minutes into: 'Step 4', and even here it sounds so in place. Overall, the musician composes a wealth of tunes, melodies and romantic interludes on top of the almost non-stop rhythmic undercurrents, and the whole thing, for a synth album with more bite and depth than most of its kind, ends up being something both accessible and enjoyable, without going too far off in any one direction and to the detriment of the warm feel and atmosphere that he's trying to provide. The 2nd disc is a 10-part sixty-three minute suite called: 'Piano Steps' and this consists of both piano and synthesizers. In the hands of someone such as Keller who can sure write a good melody, the whole thing is exactly what you'd expect - a semi-classical sounding suite of electronically derived strings and brass, with a piano lead throughout, lots of depth and lashings of tunes. If you're an old romantic - or just simply old in the head - you'll love this. If you want anything that doesn't resemble the entire contents of a Tate & Lyle factory, then you'd best stay away as they don't come much sweeter than this.

CD 1 features 74 minutes of "Electronic Steps" which exhibit dazzling scope and sonic emotion. Electronics and e-perc conspire under Keller's direction to generate a lavish series of engrossing tunes, each unique and sparkling like a foot-shaped jewel on a panoramic beach. Generally, the pieces abandon Keller's normal slow-build approach and dive into gripping melodies with gusto and creative verve. Snappy tempos share the stage with driving sequencers and urgent keyboards. Each track explores a different contemporary EM fashion--one piece employs marching band style percussion to achieve a quasi-techno anthem, while another piece allows clear piano to lend a classical edge to the composition, while another's airy synthetic windwoods evokes a pastoral flair. This results in a tour de force of varied sounds, from retro Berlin School to New Age. Regardless of the style, though, a common dynamic unifies the songs.
CD 2 features 63 minutes of "Piano Steps" which continues the electronic pilgrimage. While the first track restricts itself to solo piano, later pieces embellish that approach with additional electronic instruments. For a while, the piano remains the nucleus, forefront and in command. Eventually, however, the piano retires, to be replaced by electrified keyboards. A high degree of vitality comes through, as Keller belts out tunes that convey a jovial enthusiasm. As things progress, symphonic instruments enter the mix, reinforcing a concert hall undercurrent in the music.

"Harmonic Steps", a double CD, is an excellent electronic symphony of a cosmic orientation, that also has elements of New Instrumental Music. These latter can be appreciated above all in the general structure of the compositions, with a great protagonism of the melodies. The artist offers us his mastery at creating a work full of beauty and mystery, with themes that in some occasions tend to be of a melodic romanticism, while in other instances they have an enigmatic, or even a gloomy air. Some compositions are slow, yet they have a certain rhythm. Others have quite fast rhythms, performed mostly with sequencers and percussion.

Dating back to 'Ways of the Rainbow', Detlef Keller has always had a more romantic side that occasionally surfaces in his electronic music. On ‘Harmonic Steps’, Keller allows himself to fully explore that side of his creativity, as disc one is called Electronic Steps and disc two is called Piano Steps. Let’s look at disc two first. After a brief solo piano introduction, ‘Piano Step 2’ includes horns and soft percussion. It sounds like soundtrack music, but keep in mind that Tangerine Dream made some very good soundtrack albums. Detlef has always shown a knack with melody and that is on full display here. The third movement is much more active, and for a moment I think of Elton John, not a bad thing really. Once it takes off it is much more traditional EM, with steady beats and some synth backing to go along with the piano, a very catchy tune indeed. After that, Keller abandons the piano for a few tracks and its mostly mellow synth-based stuff, culminating in the dreamy tones of ‘Piano Step 8’ before returning to piano as the centerpiece for the ending. If you prefer your EM pure, then pop in disc one and immediately groove to the sequencing and rhythms of ‘Electronic Step 1’ with cool choirs and other elements of the retro style. The lead synth reminds me a lot of the opening track on Klaus Schulze’s classic ’X’ disc. Disc one is upbeat and peppy throughout, although it turns more calm and reflective on the 23-minute ‘Step 5’ It’s a tale of two discs, both with plenty of worthy moments to savor.

To me this seems to be quite an introspective work where Detlef has looked deep into himself and his musical career visiting most of the styles I have heard from him before over his many other solo albums but also taking us to realms which if anything are even deeper and more emotional than we have previously seen from him. The overall title of the first CD is 'Electronic Steps' and the second 'Piano Steps'. As you would expect the first is more electronic and the second makes greater use of the piano but there is still some cross over in styles between the two. The second disc is somewhat more tender than the first but there is emotion and energy to some extent in both. 'Electronic Step 1' is just as I would have expected being a highly enjoyable sequencer and rhythm driven foot-tapping piece with just hints of Schulzian stylisms here and there. The 'Second Step' however is much more delicate and highly melodic, the main rhythm being a snare drum, little sequences adding extra interest and movement but without dominating the overall atmos. The next 'Step' is a simply gorgeous piece utilizing symphonic pads over which a piano melody almost bounces along with an equally infectious sequence then rhythm. Beautiful but also uplifting body moving stuff. A very similar feeling follows through as Detlef takes another Step but this time with less piano and the addition of a high hat line. The sequence also becomes a little more strident from time to time. Now we move to by far the longest 'Step' on the album (at over twenty-three minutes)- number 5. It is a track which has a very gradual build, one element being allowed to do its thing before another is introduced- then another. Slow paced melodic multi layered sequences gently seep into the soul then a wonderful mournful lead line comes in, hitting the spot perfectly. Each time a new subtle rhythm or melody is introduced the enjoyment is cranked up a gear. The final Step on this disc starts out in the cosmos and as with the previous track a slow build up starts as one subtle rhythm after another is added to create a sedate head nodding number.
We move on to CD two. This is the 'Piano' Disc. Even though the piano isn't actually present on quite a few of the tracks, it is overall a much mellower CD than the previous one. The first 'Piano' step is a stunningly beautiful, highly melodic piece mixing wonderfully played piano with some gorgeous strings. Detlef can't half tickle those ivories! 'Step 2' follows a similar formula with the addition of some subtle brass backing then gentle sedate rhythm. The next track has a piano intro but it isn't long before electronics and drums arrive and the pace quickens. It is a piece full of joy and positive energy. 'Step 4' is in complete contrast with some quite heavy electronic stabs and no nonsense drums then moody melodies. It is an excellent track and would have been just as at home on the first disc. Indeed there is no piano in this one at all. The next Step sees a return of the piano- of sorts- the sound being treated and echoing giving it quite an ethereal feel accompanied by some simply gorgeous cello backing which morphs into a more conventional electronic melancholy lead line. <>'Step Six' begins with shimmering crystalline tones, echoing into the distance - all very Vangelis. A mournful lead sets the mood. The next episode follows on in a very similar wistful mood. Again there isn't a piano as such present. The main melody, as with the previous track, has a bright tinkling quality fitting perfectly with the welcome return of the cello and a slow pleasant rhythm. As this disc goes on, more and more the Vangelis comparison made earlier becomes apparent- Vangelis at his most mellow that is. Other comparisons could be some of the works of John Kerr or Jonn Serrie. The sound of a windy moorland at night is the image that came to my mind for 'Step Eight'. Some ticking percussion strikes up, almost like the rays of dawn. These eventually morph into a kind of looped acoustic guitar melodic motif. Other soft 'wispy' lead detail is added. Very peaceful stuff. 'Step Nine' is another highly melodic out and out piano track. All very positive it is too, helped by gossamer soft pads plus the gentlest of rhythms and sequences. The 'Last Step' contains probably the best melody on the entire CD, and that is saying something on such an album. It is all rather reflective and soul searching. As such it is a fitting way to finish an album which would have wide appeal outside the Electronic Music scene as well as inside.

Detlef Keller is al diverse jaren actief in de elektronische muziek. Samen met Mario Schönwälder en Bas B. Broekhuis levert dat meestal vrij traditionele retro op met een hoge standaardkwaliteit. Zijn soloplaten zijn wat afwisselender van aard. Op dit dubbelalbum beschrijft hij de muzikale stappen op weg naar harmonie. Dat doet hij op de eerste CD, Electronic Steps, op de bekende manier en op de tweede schijf, Piano Steps, op lichtvoetiger wijze. CD 1 vind ik op meerdere gedachten hinken. Sommige stukken zijn erg fraai en andere doen mij maar weinig. Electronic Step 2 valt in de eerste categorie door de mooie melodie en de sterke opbouw. Echter is Electronic Step 3 voor mijn doen qua ritmiek te modern van aard. En dan worden er ook nog new age-achtige fluitklanken gebruikt. Die moderne sfeer blijft over de gehele CD hangen. Dat is jammer want er staan best goede dingen op zoals de sequence en de sfeer in het lange Electronic Step 5. Piano Steps bevat gelukkig geen pianosolo’s maar de piano (of een sample) staat wel centraal. Dat levert soms Yanni-sfeertjes op maar soms wordt deze ook geïntegreerd in elektronische composities. Piano Steps 8 is een aardig stuk maar de rest vind ik, hoewel aanhoorbaar, niet zo bijzonder.
